I hated afternoons the most. Soon after came darkness—the time when a raiding squad could snatch you out of bed and drain all the blood from your body. It was amazing that any Anemies survived with the extermination campaign ridding the world of us red blood cell-deficient freaks.

I gently squeezed my sister’s hand to make sure she kept up. Dirt caked under her fingernails like it caked under mine. The cuff of her torn sleeve had stains like mine. Her pant cuffs were rolled up six times… also like mine. A younger version of me—mouthiness and all—in girl form. Unlike me, Sammie tended to dawdle, and since we held onto the last rung of the society ladder by the tips of our fingers, giving in to distraction could get us hurt—or killed.
My gaze jumped to the pale, indifferent sky then jittered to the partially constructed biodome edge as I walked. Large, clear panels filled the metal framework in a beehive of hexagons. Eventually, the damn thing would cover the entire city, including the river surrounding the island and part of the ocean capping the south side. The project had been progressing since before I was born.
Once the construction workers completed the biodome, Vie wouldn’t have to fear the destructive UV rays of our sun and could wander freely during the day. We’d have no safe period whatsoever. Vie could get us any time.

Extract

Something caught her eye. A sphere of brilliant light was shooting down through the sky. She stared at it, butterflies of excitement fluttering in her stomach. It must be a shooting star. She could make a wish. Jumbled thoughts of the things she could wish for raced across her mind, but only one stood out. It always did. “I wish I could find my mother,” she whispered.

The glowing star continued plunging, plummeting down towards the bushes just ahead of her. It wasn’t a shooting star. It was a falling star! Aluna ran towards the bushes, eager to get a glimpse of this wonder. What would a star look like? Would she be able to take it back and show the others?

The star disappeared behind the bushes. Panting now, Aluna raced towards it, her feet barely touching the ground beneath her. Thankfully, she had always been nimble-footed. Many a time she had crept softly behind Sariah, the housekeeper, and had made her almost jump out of her skin. Once, Sariah had been so shocked she’d dropped the pie she’d just taken out of the oven. 

Be quick but quiet, she told herself as she ran. Could you scare a star?

She was at the bush. She could still see the light glowing behind it, so bright it dazzled her. Using her hands to shield her eyes from the glow she peered around the bush.

The light was fading. Aluna moved her hands from her eyes so she could see better and pushed her hood back. Where was the star? The light flickered, then a shape started to form in it. She watched, transfixed as the shape turned into a girl about Aluna’s age, slim with long hair tumbling over her shoulders. The girl stretched up her arms as if embracing the heavens. Aluna let out a gasp of astonishment and the girl spun around, her eyes widening with shock as they rested on Aluna. 

For a moment they both stared at each other. The star girl’s eyes locked with Aluna’s, and a lightness filled her mind. It was as if the girl could read her mind, her soul. In a panic, Aluna tore her eyes away, grabbed her basket and fled, muttering the protection spell under her breath.

How did you get started writing?

I've always written. I had my first poem published when I was 11. I started my writing career with Jackie magazine, writing articles and photo stories.

Are you a Plotter or a Pantser?

It depends whether I'm writing to a commission or not. If I'm commissioned I have to plot as I have to send a synopsis and the first couple of chapters to my editor. If I'm not writing to a commission I work out the basic outline of my story then write 'by the seat of my pants.'

Are you most productive in the morning or evening?

Morning. Often I get out of bed and start writing straight away. I'm full of ideas in the morning.

I'm happy to be included in this blog tour. Here is some information about me:

I live and teach in the small town in which I grew up. I'm married with four children. Three girls and one boy. Their ages range from 12-22.  Nothing makes me happier than my time spent with them. I treasure every minute of it. Besides teaching third grade, I LOVE to write! I'm an avid reader of  young adult books. Contemporary is my favorite. I enjoy writing in this genre as well.  My young adult novella, Beyond Vica, was released by Astraea Press on July 8. All authors are answering the same four questions for this blog tour. Here are my answers:

1) What are you working on?
     I'm working on a full length YA novel. It's a contemporary novel about a teenage girl who learns to cope with an alcoholic parent by withdrawing into her artwork. She' revisited by a young boy from her childhood that draws her out of hiding and into world of hope. She revels in the new light that shines on her life.  She finds out a family secret that's been kept from her until she turned eighteen, causing her light to dim once again.

2) How does your work differ from others in your genre?

  My just released novella, Beyond Vica, deals with teenage friendships, first love, grief, and acceptance of others.
   The story has a unique element with the made up constellation Vica. The tales of this constellation connects the three main characters, Gabby, Sam, and Brody, from childhood into teen years. The constellation is a source of imaginative play for the trio as children, then serves a deeper meaning as they learn of Sam's cancer. Sam uses the constellation to make up a new tale that reflects the close knit friendship of the three. Gabby uses the constellation as the theme of her writing to express how she feels about losing Sam.
Gabby took over the story as I wrote. I hope you enjoy her story as much as I did writing it for her.

3) Why do you write what you write?

  I love to write, so I use it to express things that are close to my heart. Living in a world of children and teens gives me a perspective into the struggles of growing up. It also allows me to celebrate the uniqueness of each one. 
 To be able to tell a story that young people can relate to and enjoy is what drives me.

4) How does your writing process work?

    I don't have an exact formula for writing. I usually decide the life struggle that my main character will deal with first. Then decide on the character, personality , unique characteristics, etc. I branch out from there to family and friends. After that, I sketch out a very rough outline of the plot. I find that once I'm started on the story, the heroine takes over and I allow her to drive the story.

Kiss in the Dark

       I love quotes from Stephen King. His quotes put writing in perspective for me.

  I'm working on a  young adult novella now dealing with the topic of death. I know..... not fun. The reader experiences the grief process through young Gabby's eyes but also has glimpses of her humor throughout the story.
  My story is almost finished and will need to go through some polishing yet. Maybe it will be someone's kiss in the dark when it's all said and done.
